In the annals of modern history, February 14, 2019, serves as a somber reminder of the tragic Pulwama attack. It is now acknowledged in India’s collective consciousness as Black Day. On that fateful day, an Indian paramilitary convoy in the Pulwama district of Jammu and Kashmir was targeted, resulting in the loss of forty brave lives.
The Pulwama attack, which shocked people in Pakistan and around the world, was planned by a terror group with its main office there. The disgusting act of violence known as the suicide bombing left families devastated and the country in mourning. In response, India vehemently denounced the act of terrorism and emphasized the need for concerted international action to eliminate the threat of terrorism.
Although the Pulwama Attack leaves a mark on our history, it also inspires us to fight terrorism together. Black Day serves as a platform for both reaffirming our shared resolve to eradicate terror from the world and grieving the loss of loved ones. We respect the martyrs of Pulwama and work for a more secure and safe future by remembering them and being resolute.
On February 14, 2019, the Pulwama Attack transpired, marking a catastrophic phase in India's history. In the Jammu and Kashmir district of Pulwama, a convoy of Indian paramilitary soldiers, including members of the Central Reserve Police Force (CRPF), was attacked. The militant organization Jaish-e-Mohammed, based in Pakistan, planned the attack, which claimed the lives of forty gallant soldiers and injured numerous others.
The terrorists used a vehicle packed with explosives to smash into one of the convoy’s buses as part of a suicide bombing strategy. The explosion was so large that it left behind terrible damage and a great number of dead. International condemnation of the attack was based on its deliberate targeting of security forces and its ruthlessness.
India experienced a wave of sadness and resentment in the wake. Together, the public and government denounced the offenders and demanded justice for the fallen soldiers. The international community called for coordinated efforts to combat terrorism and expressed solidarity with India.
India and Pakistan’s diplomatic ties were strained after the Pulwama attack. India accused Pakistan of giving terrorist groups a haven and held Jaish-e-Mohammed accountable for the attack. India retaliated by imposing economic and diplomatic sanctions in an attempt to put pressure on Pakistan to take action against the offenders.
The two nuclear-armed neighbors also saw a spike in tensions following the incident, which put them in danger of a military conflict. The world community was instrumental in lowering tensions and advising both nations to use caution.
A 12-person team from the National Investigation Agency (NIA) was sent to investigate the attack alongside the Jammu and Kashmir Police.
According to preliminary investigations, the car was carrying over 300 kg (660 lb) of explosives, including ammonium nitrate and 80 kg (180 lb) of high-explosive RDX. According to Lt Gen Hooda, it’s possible that the explosives were taken from a building site. At first, he denied the possibility that they were brought in illegally from across the border, but he later acknowledged that he could not completely rule it out.
The suicide bomber’s identity was established and confirmed by the National Investigation Agency after DNA samples from the “meager fragments of the car” used in the attack matched that of Adil Ahmad Dar. But even after a full year of inquiry, the NIA was unable to identify the explosives’ source. 19 defendants were listed in the charge sheet that the NIA filed in August 2020.
Both India and Pakistan claim Kashmir, which is a disputed region that they both administer in part. Pakistan has attempted to seize authority over Kashmir, which is run by India. In Kashmir, which is administered by India, an insurgency started to spread in the late 1980s. Pakistan supplied material support to the insurgency. The Indian crackdown and the uprising have claimed the lives of nearly 70,000 people since 1989.
Time claims that following India’s 2016 killing of well-known militant leader Burhan Wani, unrest in Kashmir escalated. A growing number of young Kashmiris living under Indian administration have joined the insurgency.
Since 2015, militants in Kashmir with ties to Pakistan have become more frequent perpetrators of high-profile suicide assaults against Indian security personnel. Three gunmen stormed a bus and Gurdaspur police station in July 2015. The Pathankot Air Force Station was attacked by four to six gunmen at the beginning of 2016. The militants in Pampore killed nine and eight security personnel in February and June of 2016.
Nineteen soldiers were killed when four attackers broke into the Indian Army brigade headquarters in Uri in September 2016. Five security personnel were killed on December 31, 2017, when militants also attacked the Commando Training Centre at Lethpora. These attacks happened close to the national highway that connects Jammu and Srinagar.
